Doctors Without Borders Assists Migrants in Bosnia

A board certified psychiatrist, Dr. Susan Turner has practiced, taught, and directed psychiatric medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Susan Turner holds active membership with Doctors Without Borders.

An organization that responds to medical emergencies and humanitarian crises around the world, Doctors Without Borders recently assisted migrants and refugees who are enduring dangerous conditions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over the past few months, large numbers of men, women, and children have begun to amass along the country’s internal borders as Bosnian authorities continue to restrict cross-canton movements.

In November of 2019, Doctors Without Borders began providing medical services to some of the more than 6,100 displaced people living in or near the border cities of Bihac and Velika Kladusa. Specific issues addressed by Doctors Without Borders medical professionals include skin conditions such as scabies and body lice, which have arisen as a result of profoundly harsh living conditions. Doctors Without Borders has also treated high numbers of respiratory tract infections and offered mental health services to survivors of violence and sexual assault.
